A European Arrest Warrant (EAW) is an arrest warrant valid throughout all member states of the European Union (EU).
A European Arrest Warrant can only be issued in certain circumstances. An EAW cannot be issued by a member state just to enable an investigation and as such must be tied to a prosecution or the enforcement of a prison sentence.
Once issued, it requires another member state to arrest and transfer a criminal suspect or sentenced person to the issuing state so that the person can be put on trial or complete a detention period.
